Sounds of Zurich with The Clementines.

Inspired by the cool and calmness of Zurich and its surrounding landscapes, The Clementines have curated the soundscape of Locke am Platz, full of ambient and soulful sounds taking you from day-to-night.

We caught up with DJ Nico Schintzig, a Zurich local and contributing programmer to Zurich’s Rundfunk FM. Aside from playing a set at Locke am Platz’s spectacular opening party, Nico also shared his favourite spots on where to enjoy a great listening experience throughout the city. Whether that be when buying some records, drinks with friends or dancing the night away.

HUM records. 

Known as a paradise for music lovers, HUM offers an array of Hip Hop, R’n’B, Soulfunk, Jazz and more. Spend hours digging through the selection of records at HUM, take your friends or peruse alone.

Stereo.

One of the city's latest Hi-Fi bars, expect beautiful interiors, Klipsch speakers and a Varia RDM40 rotary mixer complete with an array of specialty cocktails.

Zero Zero.

Finding hundreds of rare grooves, Zero is the largest second-hand vinyl store in Zurich. Find an array of genres and one of the city's largest collections of re-issues.

Kasheme.

One of the city’s premier spots to drink, listen and dance. Found in a retro-style living room, expect musical adventures in unique, cosy interiors. With some of the world’s most renowned selectors spinning.

Zukunft & Bar 3000.

Zukunft has long been host to some of the best music in town. For Nico, he not only regularly plays at Bar 3000 but has been frequenting Zukunft for over 18 years.

How does Zurich inspire your as a creative?

For me, I feel hugely inspired by the club Zukunft. As I mentioned before, I have been going for 18 years and have had so many good music moments there. Alongside the Rundfunk Festival where I met so many good DJ’s, vinyl and music lovers.  

In the quieter moments, when I walk through the city with my headphones on, or watch people passing by while I’m sitting in the tram, I feel inspired. 

Watching people go through their everyday lives. Increasingly, I also feel walks in nature make me feel calm and bring me moments of inspiration.

How would you describe your series of playlists for Locke and how do you want the guests to feel when listening to it? 

Throughout the playlists I wanted to, transport good and positive vibes. Starting with the morning playlist, which aims to put you in an easy and uplifting vibe perfect for starting the day. My afternoon playlist is a little bit more up-tempo but still in the realm of background music. The after-dinner playlist should start to get you slowly into a party mood. All of them I wanted to be subtle yet engaging.

What’s your top three songs on your Locke playlists?

Space is my place by Calm.

This is a song I have been listening to for a long time, its perfect for a night drive, watching the world pass by during a train ride or for a walk at the beach.

Sabato Italiano by I Coccodrilli.

I love the Italian language (for me its the most beautiful language even I can barely speak two words…but I’m getting there). This song gives me the feeling im walking down the riviera.

Always get through to you by Barry Can’t Swim.

It’s not so much this particular track but more that his new album is one of the first albums of contemporary music I have bought for a long time.
