Imagine yourself savoring after-work drinks by the picturesque canal, soaking up the vibrant atmosphere. Picture exploring lush green spaces, uncovering hidden gems for dancing the night away, and indulging in gastronomic experiences worth raving about. We asked Manchester local The Flâneuse, to share their favourite spots to enjoy summer in the city.
A spot for al-fresco drinks: Flawd
Flawd Wine Bar on New Islington Marina is perfect for alfresco drinks. As the sun sets over the marina and you sip a glass of wine, there’s no better place to be. It’s the top spot for natural wine, small plates, and fun yet chilled vibes.
A spot for a picnic in the park: Peel Park
Peel Park in Salford is a hidden gem, often underrated but truly beautiful. Located in the city centre, it's the perfect spot for a summer picnic and to feel like you’ve escaped the city.
A spot everyone is talking about: Skof
Skof is undoubtedly Manchester’s most exciting opening of the year. It marks the first solo project of Tom Barnes, one of the UK's most renowned chefs and a L’Enclume alumnus. Every foodie should have it on their list, and I can't wait to visit.
Additionally, Ancoats Deli has just opened on Murray St, it is a much-needed addition to the area's foodie scene! Serving up grab-and-go sandwich staples, coffee, cheese, charcuterie, pantry essentials and a selection of martinis, spritzes, and wines. I can't wait to spend my summer evenings and weekends here.
A spot for some culture: Manchester Art Gallery or Factory International - Aviva Studios
Manchester Art Gallery and Factory International - Aviva Studios are two of my favourite spots. Manchester Art Gallery is ideal for a quick visit during your day. If you're seeking inspiration, the gallery has a large collection of Pre-Raphaelite paintings, craft and design, and early twentieth-century British art, giving you plenty of pieces to admire.
Then there's Factory International, Aviva Studios, a newcomer to Manchester's art scene that has quickly become a cultural hub where art, music, and culture intersect. From theatre shows and exhibitions to multimedia performances and gigs, there’s something for everyone.
A spot for nature: Fletcher Moss, Didsbury
Fletcher Moss is a little oasis in Didsbury, just outside the city centre. It has its own botanical gardens and a path that leads you to the River Mersey, perfect for a park loop and a leisurely stroll along the river. Treat yourself to a drink at the tearoom within the park and take in all the greenery.
A spot to dance the night away: Band on the Wall, Matt and Phred’s, Diecast
Start your night with some live music at Band on the Wall or Matt and Phred’s, two amazing venues in the Northern Quarter where you can enjoy both emerging talent and established artists. From there, head to Diecast which is my go-to spot for a boogie. Expect frozen daiquiris, immersive dance parties, and a staged runway show.
What would be your ultimate summer day in Manchester?
This is tricky! If I could pack everything into one ultimate summer’s day, it would look like this:
Morning:
I’d kick off with a class at one of Manchester’s top fitness studios—Blok or Ryde are my favourites. Afterward, a pastry from Companio is a must; their new, larger bakery on Spear Street is pure pastry heaven.
Afternoon:
I’d spend the afternoon browsing a market, iced latte in hand, while picking up ceramics or jewellery from local makers. I'd also hit up some favourite shopping spots like Nordic Muse, Form, Unitom, The Norah Store and more. For lunch, I’d teleport to Yellowhammer in Stockport for their delicious sandwiches and sourdough bakes, enjoying them at an outdoor table while people-watching. Afterward, I'd chill in the sun at Didsbury Park with a good book or podcast.
Evening:
A pre-dinner glass of natural wine at Flawd is a perfect way to start the evening. For dinner, I'd head to Climat, known for its fantastic food, extensive wine list, and beautiful rooftop space—ideal if Manchester is blessed with sunshine. I’d then catch a show if there’s something on that evening that piques my interest. After the theatre, I'd round off the night with a cocktail at either Stray or Schofield's.
