Drawing inspiration from the city of Lisbon and the historic charm of the original 1600s convent, Locke de Santa Joana beautifully embodies the concept of 'old meets new.'
Locke de Santa Joana is in its final preparations.
Originally a 17th-century convent, the building has been a landmark in the Marquês de Pombal area. The design teams have preserved many historical and original elements, including Azulejos (Portuguese tiles), frescoes, door frames, and other features discovered during the restoration.
The design pays homage to Lisbon's rich history while incorporating contemporary elements to cater to the modern traveller.
Paying homage to heritage.
Many of the social spaces at Locke de Santa Joana are designed around the former convent, creating a reimagined environment that blends stylistic overlaps and new beginnings, and seeks to retell the site’s complex history. In these spaces, old and new coexist, each retaining its distinct identity.
Bespoke modern design elements are balanced with historical artifacts and architectural features, offering a unique, vibrant, and elegant urban destination. Many of the restaurants and bars open onto the sun-soaked courtyard, featuring lush greenery, shaded areas for midday relaxation, and a pool. The outdoor area also showcases historical doorways, columns, and artifacts discovered during the hotel's construction.
Luxe living.
Locke de Santa Joana’s 370 apartments were designed by New York-based design studio Post Company. Post Company strived to combine the ‘historical architectural bones’ that are part of the building’s DNA with contemporary comforts.
The apartments feature light oak flooring, designed to age over time to give residential feel and clean architecture serving as a canvas for unique furniture and fixtures. The design balances antique forms and contemporary elements, with mohair and boucle upholstered furniture adding texture.
Modern lighting and whimsical side tables complement historical details, while floor-to-ceiling drapery and mirrors reference the original church architecture. Kitchens in select rooms showcase bold red millwork and sculptural lighting, blending modern and historical styles. Bathrooms feature Zellige tiles and Portuguese limestone, nodding to the building’s rich history.
