The Munich Marathon takes place on 9th October and with two locations in Munich, we thought it would be a great time to explore the running routes that sit within the surrounding areas of Sendling and Theresienwiese.
We spoke with Sarah, a regular runner based in Munich who is running the half marathon and also staying at WunderLocke. She takes us through a few of her favourite running routes and some beautiful spots that you will stumble across along the way.
P.S if hiking is more your style - make sure to ask front desk at WunderLocke about our excursions with Evolve Fitness. Set out to the Tegernsee region and hike through meandering paths to take in views of the Bavarian Alps
When did your journey with running / fitness begin?
My journey with running began when I was just 7 years old. At that time I started with track and field, really fell in love with this sport and never stopped running since then.
What is the running community like in Munich?
In Munich you can find a lot of cool running communities. So, if you are new to the city, you will easily find nice people and new friends.
Nearly every day you can join a different group, depending on what level you have as a runner. If you want to enjoy a nice long run through the city or speedy intervals.
What inspires you about Munich?
What inspires me the most about Munich is, that it has so much more to offer than Bavarian beer and the annual Oktoberfest celebration: arts and culture, good food, gorgeous places and buildings, a lot of nature in the city and the alps nearby.
What inspires you when you run?
For me running is my safe space, the time during the day I can be with myself and think about everything. I love that running is so simple. Just put your shoes on and let’s go! It’s a beautiful sport through which I met a lot of amazing people.
What are your favourite running routes in Munich?
- Olympia Park
- English Garden
- Nymphenburger Schloss
In the Olympia park you can add nice hill sprints to your training while running on top of the Olympiaberg.
After a nice run in the English Garden you definitely should stop and reward yourself with a coffee from Fräulein Grüneis. The Nymphenburger Schloss is good for long runs.
The most scenic spots I have found while running are the Olympiaberg (watching the sunrise or sunset from there) and the Nymphenburger Schloss.
Running in the garden at the Nymphenburger Schloss is really a highlight. If you run early in the morning, you could be lucky meeting a deer. You will discover beautiful routes along small rivers, romantic bridges and hidden smaller castles.
Join us at both Schwan Locke and WunderLocke and discover these amazing running routes for yourself.
